2006-2007 Program Highlights

Marietta Reads! began its fourth year with its annual kickoff on the Historic Square in Marietta September 30. Events included a guest storyteller, book giveaways, performances by Marietta High School (MHS) drama and dance students, a puppet show, and music by the Mars Hill Porch Pickers. Parents and children filled the Square and enjoyed the activities provided by Marietta City Schools’ staff and students including face painting by MHS Cheerleaders.

During the winter quarter, the Marietta Metro Rotary Club distributed 686 English and 85 Spanish Dictionaries to all third grade students district-wide.

Over 120 students participated in the 3rd annual Marietta Reads! Read-A-Thon. During the four weeks of the Read-A-Thon, students read books and earned money from their sponsors for the amount of minutes or pages read during the competition. Over $10,700 in pledges were earned. The grand prize of a 2007 Dell laptop computer was presented to a 3rd grade student from the Marietta Center for Advanced Academics (MCAA). Other prizes included Theatre in the Square and Atlanta Hawks game tickets, Read-a-Thon t-shirts and bookmarks, a digital camera and printer from Pepsi, an iPod nano, an iPod shuffle, and Stevi B’s pizza coupons.
